Lance O. Bauer, Ph.D.
Professor
Director, Neural Dynamics Lab, Postdoctoral Training Program

Dr. Lance Bauer is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and an Associate Scientific Director of the Alcohol Research Center. He is the Principal Investigator for a major scientific component of the Center grant. That 5-year project is a study of genetic and neurophysiological moderators of psychosocial treatment response among 13-18 yo adolescents with alcohol and other substance use disorders. He has published extensively (>130 pubs) on the topics of genetic and personality risk factors, their neurophysiological correlates, and their contributions to treatment outcome in both adolescent and adult substance abusers.

Dr. Bauer's research is also supported by other grants. He now, for example, devotes effort to the NIAAA-funded COGA project for which he is a co-investigator and member of its neurophysiology committee. In addition, Dr. Bauer is the PI of an active NIDA-funded R01 focusing on genetic and phenotypic predictors of relapse to substance dependence. Furthermore, he is listed as the PI on three large research project grant applications awaiting review: (1) Adolescent Body Mass and Impulsivity: Genetic and Developmental Perspectives; (2) Binge eating and excess body mass in female college students: genetic, neurophysiological, and cognitive risk factors; (3) Comorbid disorders contributing to risk for physical injury and cardiovascular disease in HIV/AIDS.

In addition to his own research projects, Dr. Bauer plays a vital role in the activities of the Department of Psychiatry and the UCHC by serving on the ARC's Executive Committee, the Department of Psychiatryâ??s Executive Committee, the Scientific Advisory Committee for the GCRC, and the Senior Appointments and Promotions Committees for both the School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine. He is also involved in research at the national level. He is a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism and the College on Problems of Drug Dependence. He is a former member of two committees for CPDD: (1) Publications and (2) Human Subject Research.

Dr. Bauer is called upon frequently to provide grant reviews for regular study sections and special emphasis panels for CSR; NIAAA, NIDA, and NIMH; the NIH Loan Repayment Program; and the Department of Defense. Dr. Bauer is an appointed member of CSR's Adult Psychopathology and Disorders of Aging study section and a former member of NIDA's Training and Career Development study section (NIDA-K). He has served as a research supervisor for 6 postdoctoral trainees and several medical students.
