Dr. Leighton Y. Huey is the Birnbaum/Blum Professor. He was Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut from 1998 to 2010, and Training Director from 2005 to 2010. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Huey was Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School from 1994-1998, and before that was Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Huey has a clinical and research background in psychopharmacology focusing on mood disorders and attention deficit disorders. One of his goals is to create opportunities for the early identification of individuals having psychiatric problems so that more effective interventions can occur resulting in improved outcomes and reduction in illness burden. He is interested in person-centered care and new models of clinical delivery. He is an advocate of having mental health, public health, and physical health efforts integrated and applied to innovative community-based multidisciplinary training models which graduate individuals who are well-trained to join the public sector workforce. He is also committed to the training of clinician-scientists as future academicians with a public-sector focus. He goal has been to point the UConn Department in the direction of being a strong public sector-oriented Department to serve as a resource to the public sector through clinical, research, and training initiatives with various State and City systems. He is nationally involved on workforce redesign as part of healthcare reform. He is in the process of accepting a position as an Associate Dean focused on Continuing and Community Medical Education and System Redesign.
