Andrea Gainey, M.S., C.G.C.
Certified Genetic Counselor
Ms. Gainey has been with the University of Connecticut Health Center since 1980. She began in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Human Genetics and then in the Department of Psychiatry. Ms. Gainey has been a member of the University of Connecticut Health Center Huntington's Disease Program since 1998. Her experience includes clinical genetics and prenatal diagnosis as well as supportive counseling and support group facilitation.
Her primary functions include: assessing patients for presymptomatic testing, acquiring family histories and reviewing the pattern of inheritance seen in Huntington's Disease with families. Ms. Gainey was instrumental in having the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) recognize the University of Connecticut Health Center Huntington's Disease Program as a presymptomatic testing center.
In addition, she links families with other services as needed, such as traditional prenatal diagnosis or the newer preimplantation genetic diagnosis.
