Postdoctoral training at
the University of Connecticut Alcohol Research Center (UCONN ARC) began in October, 1979,
with the award of a postdoctoral training grant by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism, a branch of the National Institutes of Health. Over the approximate 20
year existence of the training program, fellows with a variety of specialties have
acquired additional expertise in alcohol/drug abuse research techniques, grantsmanship,
and advanced statistical methodologies. Trainees at the UCONN ARC are required to attend a
weekly seminar which is designed to provide a strong foundation in theory, multivariate
statistics, grantsmanship, and experimental design. Trainees are also individually
mentored, by a member of the training faculty, in one or more of the following areas:
Diagnosis and Typologies of Alcoholism: Pharmacological, Behavioral, and Psychosocial
Treatments for Alcohol Dependence; Vulnerability/Risk Factors; Neuroimaging; Basic
Neurobiology; Medical Complications of Alcohol/Drug Abuse. The UCONN ARC postdoctoral
training program offers a unique opportunity for the training of researchers who can
function effectively in basic and applied research settings. Our record to date suggests
that graduates of this program have been able to generate independent grant support and
scholarly publications.
Fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must have completed all
requirements for M.D. or Ph.D. degree before entering program. The duration of the
fellowship is 1-3 years. Stipends are determined by years of postdoctoral experience. To
apply, send curriculum vitae, 3 letters of recommendation, copies of recent publications,
and cover letter describing research interests, career plans, and reasons for seeking
training to: Dr. Nancy Petry Department of Psychiatry, MC-3944 University of Connecticut
Health Center Farmington, CT 06030-3944 PH: (860) 679-2593 Email: petry@psychiatry.uchc.edu
